Ballina is centred on an island at the mouth of the Richmond River and is surrounded by 32 km of white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waterways. Ballina and Lennox Head boast some of the most beautiful surfing beaches and picturesque headlands on the east coast of Australia.
We have been able to secure a very nice hall for services at the Ballina Surf Club on the northern end of Lighthouse Beach in East Ballina. The location of this facility is simply stunning, being nearly right on the beach. It provides views from within the meeting room of the surf and the Richmond River breakwater that extends out into the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Car parking is adjacent to the hall near the corner of Compton Drive and Lighthouse Parade in East Ballina.
Ballina is approximately 750 km north of Sydney, and a short 200 km drive from Brisbane. There is also a major airport for the region in Ballina which has links to many of the eastern state capitals such as Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, as well as the regional airport of Coolangatta on the Gold Coast.
Ballina has several major shopping malls with all the conveniences one would expect in a larger city, and there are a variety of restaurants to choose from for Feast-time dining experiences. There is just so much to do in this part of what we Aussies call “God’s own country”.
The hinterland and the hills behind the area are absolutely beautiful, where there are many scenic drives and places to visit, various golf courses, and tourist attractions. A freshwater swimming area called Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head is available for those who would prefer swimming in calmer waters than those found in the ocean beaches. There are excellent fishing spots, and boats can be hired for use in the calm waters of the Richmond River and estuary.
There are extensive walking and biking tracks throughout this part of the coast, as well as the opportunity to walk barefoot on the beautiful, white sands of the many surf beaches and alongside the Richmond River. There is a peaceful, millennial feel to this area since it has not been overdeveloped. It also maintains a somewhat quiet country-like charm, which should help us concentrate on why we are here at God’s Feast of Tabernacles - to picture the coming rule of Jesus Christ in the Kingdom of God.
An abundance of accommodations are available both in Ballina and in Lennox Head, but as the Feast falls during the school holidays and a major hockey tournament this year, prices will be at a peak, and early bookings will be essential. Both Lennox Head and Ballina are the suggested places to seek out accommodation. Lennox Head is a very easy 10 to 15-minute traffic-free drive to the Ballina Lighthouse Beach Surf Club, where we will be holding services.
Just thirty minutes to the north from Ballina is Byron Bay, a hub for holiday makers that is also favoured with beautiful beaches. The lighthouse on Cape Byron is situated on the top of some stunning cliffs with vast views over the ocean. This is a magnificent site to watch the migrating humpback whales as they travel south around Feast time each year. One can walk on tracks to the tip of Cape Byron which is the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. It’s well worth a visit whilst in the area.
The Ballina area is well serviced by roads and the major thoroughfare is the Pacific Highway which is improving daily due to extensive ongoing upgrades. Buses ply the road from Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast, and prices are reasonable.
